NewsPod gathers the news from the RSS and Atom feeds you choose into one list, newest first, with each story’s source, how long ago it was published, its summary and its picture. Tap a story to read it in full on its own site, and it moves to Viewed, the latest viewed first, to find again. Pull the list down, or tap Refresh, for the latest. A new install starts with a few well known feeds, ABC News, BBC World, The Guardian and The Conversation. Under Feeds find more: give a site’s address to list the feeds it offers, or words to search for among the feeds followed on Feedly, and add those you want. Remove any you do not want. Swipe a story right to keep it under Later, even after its feed drops it, and swipe it right there once read to move it to Viewed. Swipe a story left to remove it from the news. Dismissed lists the stories removed, while their feeds still have them, and a swipe right brings one back.
There is no account, no tracking and no algorithm deciding what you see: just the feeds you chose, newest first. Your feeds, and the stories you keep, view and remove, are kept on your device. Logging in to your own personal online data store (Pod) is optional. When you do, they are kept on your Pod too, encrypted, so your phone and your desktop show the same feeds and the same stories kept for later and viewed, and the removed stories stay removed on both. Changes made while not logged in reach the Pod the next time you are. Pods are an innovation from the inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. The app is supported by Togaware and implemented by Graham Williams in Flutter for cross platform deployment.
We make this project available for free so if you appreciate the app then please show some ❤️ and tap on the star at GitHub to support our work. See the AU Solid Community showcase for our apps using the Solid ecosystem.
See the Install Guide for installation instructions for any platform.
In a browser most feeds cannot be read: news sites only allow their own pages to read their feeds. Use NewsPod on a desktop or phone.
Keep which stories have been read on the Pod too, as the feeds and the removed stories already are.
Mark stories as read, and save stories to read later.
Group the news by feed or by topic, and search it.
Find a site’s feed from the address of the site itself.
Import and export the feeds as OPML, to move from another reader.
